About the garden

Newkirk Community Garden was established in 2019 when a group of neighbors came together to prevent the closure of the community garden at 736 East 8th Street. In an area of Brooklyn where very little public green space exists, new and returning volunteers have revitalized a green community space started in 2010 as Compost for Brooklyn.

The garden under construction, with volunteers helping build raised beds and shovel soil.

Today, we are building Newkirk Community Garden to be a gathering place for neighbors & friends to experience nature and grow in environmental stewardship. The garden is a focal point for collaboration among area schools and social organizations. Going forward, we'll keep expanding access to the garden as a space where diverse residents create deeper connections with each other and with the neighborhood.

Our mission statement

The Newkirk Community Garden is a small space with a big mission: to bring neighbors together to grow healthy food and native flora, build community, encourage healthy ecosystems, and care for and celebrate our neighborhood.
